Doppio Espresso: What Is It & How To Make It?

 Last Updated January 26, 2022

Have you ever heard someone order a doppio espresso in a café and thought to yourself, what's that!? In this guide I'll give my barista opinion on what a doppio espresso is and how to make it.

What is a Doppio Espresso?

A doppio is simply a double shot of espresso extracted from an coffee machine. Doppio means "double" in Italian, so it's literally just another way of saying "double espresso".

A doppio also known as a "double shot" or "double espresso".

Where Can I Order a Espresso Doppio?

You can order this coffee from any café - just ask your barista for one.  The cafe's menu will either say doppio or double espresso. Starbucks for example uses the word "doppio", while cafes where I'm from in Australia call it a "double shot".

How to Make a Doppio Espresso?

You make a doppio the exact same way you would make a espresso. Just double the volume! Below is step-by-step guide to making a great tasting doppio / double espresso:

  1. Purge/rinse group head: Since you are making espresso, it's very important that you get rid of any old coffee grinds in your espresso machine and group from prior shots. You do this by purging the espresso machine, rinsing the group head, and wiping away any dried coffee.
  2. Grind and tamp: The next step is getting a good grind from your coffee grinder. I like to grind 18g of coffee in a double shot group head basket. Then you want to do a nice level tamp to compact the coffee. It should be one motion, no unnecessary tamps or flicks required.
  3. Extract: Simply turn on your coffee maker's pump to allow 15 bars of water to stream through the water to extract  your espresso. Since this is a doppio, you are looking to exact 60ml (2 ounces) of espresso in 25-30 seconds.
  4. Done: Now enjoy your caffeine buzz!

What Does a Doppio Taste Like?

Like espresso! Just double the amount. You should order one if you need a really hard hit of espresso to wake you up!

The taste will depend on the type of coffee beans you use. I prefer to use fruiter blends for espresso, while I enjoy a more earthy blend for milk based coffees.

I recommend ordering a few different blends of coffee beans from your local roaster. This way you can try out a few at the same time to discover which flavour you like the best.

What's a Iced Doppio Espresso?

An iced doppio espresso is just an iced coffee with two shots of espresso in it. Just like a doppio is two shots of espresso. It's a great summer version of the drink that gives you a great coffee buzz.

Can You Make it at Home?

If you have an espresso machine you can make an double shot at home. If you don't have an machine, you can consider using a cheaper Nespresso or manual espresso maker to get a similar experience (but to be honest not as tasty).
